Asbestos in Northern Ireland

A duty to manage deadly asbestos. ‘It is estimated that up to half of the buildings in Northern Ireland may contain some form of asbestos. Asbestos was widely used in industry in the 20th Century, particularly in the building industry where asbestos cement products, thermal insulation and fire proofing were widely used. The use of asbestos is now banned but it can still be found in many buildings, including libraries, hospitals, schools and homes. Asbestos disease is caused by breathing in very fine fibres which can accumulate in the lungs and cause several conditions, including asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer.’
